February marks American Heart Month—a time traditionally focused on cardiac health. But at Philadelphia Integrative Medicine (PIM) in Wayne, on the Main Line, we know that heart health is never an isolated topic. It is the core reflection of your entire system: your metabolism, your stress resilience, your immune function, and your cellular vitality. True heart health is built on foundations of care that address the root causes of systemic imbalance.
Our entire team of practitioners is dedicated to providing a unified, systems-based approach. When you come to PIM, you are not engaging with a single practitioner; you are engaging with a full team of experts committed to leveraging the latest medical advances—including peptide therapy and advanced lipidomics—to secure your health, quality of life, longevity, and performance.
“A Unified Approach to Longevity At PIM, you aren’t just seeing one provider. You are supported by a collaborative team of IFM-certified experts, including Dr. Georgia Tetlow, Dr. Jennifer Patterson, and Lynda Sherland, CRNP, all working together on your personalized health roadmap.”
Decoding Oral Peptides: “Cellular Text Messages” for Repair
In recent years, peptides have become an exciting area of focus in integrative and functional medicine. Peptides are small chains of amino acids that act as messengers in the body. They tell your cells what to do—like burn fat, build muscle, heal tissue, or produce hormones.
What are Peptides?
“Think of them as “Cellular Text Messages.” They are small chains of amino acids that give your cells clear instructions to burn fat, repair tissue, or calm inflammation—now available at PIM in easy oral formulations.

Think of peptides like “text messages” your body sends to itself that help your body do what it’s naturally designed to do—just more efficiently and with clearer direction. Because they work with your body’s own signaling systems, they support an extraordinary range of processes:
- Tissue repair, Angiogenic, and Cytoskeletal signaling
- Immune modulation
- Metabolic signaling and gut barrier integrity
- Neurological and cognitive pathways
Innovation: Oral Peptides That Actually Work
Traditionally, many peptides were only available as injections. Today, advances in formulation available at PIM have made it possible to offer certain peptides in oral form. This makes them easier to use and simpler to incorporate into a personalized longevity plan without the need for needles.
The PIM Peptide Protocol: Targeted Support for Gut, Immunity, and Metabolism
We utilize specific classes of peptides that directly impact metabolic and heart health:
- Metabolic Pathways (GLP-1): These support natural appetite control, blood sugar balance, and metabolic efficiency.
- We recommend these daily, according to FDA guidelines, based on documented safety data, and only order direct from manufacture.
- We await oral formulations that have documented safety and absorption data:
- BPC-157 (Gut & Tissue Support): Promotes gut lining integrity and rapid tissue repair.
- KPV (Inflammation-Balancing): A naturally occurring peptide that calms systemic inflammation.
- Thymic Peptides (Ta1, Thymulin, and Thymomodulin): A triad that coordinates and strengthens immune function during stress or aging.
- Muscle & Energy (Leucine-Based): Supports lean muscle maintenance and efficient cellular energy production.
The Heart Health Blind Spot: Why “Normal” Cholesterol Could Be Misleading
At PIM, our commitment to cutting-edge care extends deep into our diagnostics. When it comes to heart health, standard lab work often misses the full story. For decades, conventional medicine has relied on calculated LDL-C (Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol). However, this number provides an incomplete, and often misleading, picture of your true risk.
“Standard tests look at the amount of cholesterol, but we look at the ‘vehicles.’ You can have ‘normal’ cholesterol levels and still be at high risk for a heart attack if your particle count (LDL-P) is high.”
LDL-P vs. Calculated LDL-C: Counting the “Vehicles”
The critical distinction in modern cardiology is that it is not the mass of cholesterol (LDL-C) but the number of cholesterol-carrying particles (LDL-P) that drives risk.
- LDL-C: Measures the total amount of cholesterol carried. You can have a “low” score but still have a high number of small, dense, damaging particles.
- LDL-P: A direct count of how many LDL particles are in your bloodstream. These are the “vehicles” that can penetrate the arterial wall and form plaque.
Studies show LDL-P is a far superior predictor of heart attack and stroke risk. By focusing on this, our team identifies patients with “normal” cholesterol who are, in fact, at high risk.
Assessing the Arterial Wall: Endothelial Health
Plaque formation is an active inflammatory disease of the arterial wall lining, called the endothelium. We use specialty blood tests to look for key signals:
- Lp-PLA2: An enzyme indicating active inflammation and the stability of existing plaque. High levels suggest a risk of plaque rupture.
- MPO (Myeloperoxidase): A marker of endothelial stress. High MPO levels suggest the arteries are under attack and that soft plaque is actively forming or becoming unstable.
Supporting the Mevalonate Pathway: Personalized Cardio-Metabolic Care
Statins are a cornerstone of conventional medicine, and many patients seek us out because they do not prefer or do not tolerate these drugs. Statins inhibit the mevalonate pathway, which is also responsible for synthesizing Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).
For patients who require statins—and for those looking for statin alternatives—we recommend formulations that go beyond standard CoQ10. We use geranylgeraniol (GG Gold™), a key intermediate in the mevalonate pathway. This supports the production of CoQ10 and other essential biomolecules, helping to mitigate side effects and maintain mitochondrial health. Many of our patients are surprised to learn that statin side effects can often be effectively mitigated. By understanding that statins work through inhibition of the mevalonate pathway, we can strategically support that pathway with targeted supplementation—helping make statin therapy not only more tolerable, but potentially safer.
“Statin Intolerant?
“We don’t just manage symptoms; we support the Mevalonate Pathway. By using GG Gold™ and targeted CoQ10, we help mitigate statin side effects and maintain the mitochondrial energy your heart needs.”
Building Your Foundation: PIM’s Daily Resilience Bundles
Advanced therapies are powerful—but lasting heart health is built on consistent, everyday support. Our curated Fullscript Bundles provide high-quality nutrients your body relies on:
- Vitamin B Bundle (Energy for Your Heart): Your heart is a muscle that never rests. B vitamins help your body convert food into usable energy and support balanced homocysteine levels—an important marker in cardiovascular health.
Vitamin B Bundle: Energy for Your Heart - 2. Nervous System Bundle (Supporting Stress Resilience): Chronic “fight or flight” activation contributes to elevated blood pressure and inflammation. This bundle helps regulate the nervous system, encouraging a healthier stress response and reducing wear and tear on your cardiovascular system.
Nervous System Bundle: Supporting Stress Resilience - Cold & Flu Bundle (Immunity’s First Line of Defense): A resilient immune system allows your cardiovascular system to function more smoothly by reducing the inflammatory stress that pulls energy away from essential cardiac systems.
Cold & Flu Bundle: Immunity’s First Line of Defense
The Future of Peptides: Where the Field Is Headed
The development of new, clinically validated oral peptides could represent a foundational shift toward Precision Medicine. We are moving beyond the concept of “metabolic excess” to focus on how to deliver clearer, more efficient biological signals to the body. Looking ahead, peptides are poised to play a central role in:
- Longevity and healthspan optimization
- Gut–immune–metabolic axis support
- Muscle preservation and metabolic aging
- Neurocognitive resilience
- Recovery and regenerative protocols
We await safety and bioavailability data in order to keep patients protected and to reduce unnecessary cost. No need to invest unless there is clarity that products perform well, are assimilable – especially oral peptide forms – and have proven efficacy.
