Lifestyle Choices Change Your Gene Expression

1. When did you, as a doctor, realize the need to focus on genetic mutations and testing for your patients?

I have been doing genetic testing since 2004.  I started testing for specific genotypes, as well as doing functional genetic testing, i.e. measuring different biochemical pathways that are most affected by certain genes. What makes the most difference is measuring how genes express themselves, not just knowing the genotype. Gene expression has a lot to do with lifestyle choices including diet, exercise and stress, as well as specific nutrient inputs.

2. When someone tests positive for MTHFR what do you believe your role is as a health care provider?

My role is to educate my patients so they can make more informed decisions that will move them further into balance and greater health. Forty-five to 50% of the general population has a methylation deficit, but the deficit may not be significant. Most patients with chronic illness have a moderate or significant deficit. There are so many lifestyle choices that can help improve methylation, see below.

3. What do you believe the patient's role is?

The patient’s role is everything! The provider is an educator and ideally someone who will inspire people to make the lifestyle and behavior changes that will make the most difference.
