Happy Fourth of July America!
Written by Dr. Georgia Tetlow, Integrative Medicine Physician and Fatima Flynn MS
Hi Everyone,
I hope your fourth of July was spectacular! I enjoyed seeing red, white and blue everywhere and watching the amazing firework display in Philadelphia. Food options were plentiful in my family, but making the best choice is key. Whether it's a family barbecue or a night out with friends, sometimes we eat outside of our "diet". But the question is are we really well nourished within our "diet?" Contrary to popular belief, nutrition in America is poor!
Even those who try to eat a diet rich in wholesome foods can end up low in certain vitamins and minerals.
There can be a few reasons for this. As the soil our foods grow in become depleted, the vitamin and mineral counts decrease. This has been happening over the past 100 years! We also tend to take medications that deplete our bodies of key nutrients. Studies show that many of us are deficient in key vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. The unfortunate part is, all of this is happening at a time when our modern lifestyles are increasing our need for nutrients. These nutrients help us tolerate stress and environmental toxins.
"Because most clinicians do not adequately evaluate or test for specific nutrients, we may overlook a nutrient deficiency that might be impacting a patient's physical or mental well-being" - Tieraona Low Dog, MD
It's a critical time in medicine and clinicians must look to a more holistic, whole body approach that recognizes the complexity of the human body and helps patients support healing. It is now more important than ever that we take initiative for our own healing and prevention through lifestyle and everyday choices.
